LAWN CARE SIMPLIFIED - A Safe and Natural Approach

A fresh look at natural / organic lawn care

A Fresh Look at Natural / Organic Lawn Care

This lawn care education center was established to regularly update my book Building A Healthy Lawn: A Safe and Natural Approach (Storey Publications 1988).  This book, one of the first of its kind,  helped launch a the natural lawn care movement in the United States and Canada.  I re-state and add to what the book had to say, based on new development. It is a way to share the lawn and garden knowledge I’ve accumulated during the 50+ plus years since first becoming captivated with the idea of organic gardening.

In the postings to follow you will receive the benefits of hard-won knowledge about lawn care, soil improvement, mowing, aeration, clay soil, organics and other bio-friendly products and solutions. There is nothing like hands-on experience with both organics and chemical care to help you separate fact, fiction  and theory. Because of our lawn service business, we have had the opportunity to treat thousands of yards and test many different products and procedures over the years. And because of our web store, we also get feedback from homeowners and landscapers all across the country.

In truth, not much at all has changed regarding the basics of creating a chemical-free lawn since I wrote the book 35 years ago. However, there have been improvements in grasses and equipment, and there are a some new products and methods that can help achieve lawn (and soil)  improvement goals faster than what we could do before.  I also have plenty of new tips and observations for you.

Instead of publishing a new book, I'm using this site to release information as I write it. I want to keep this fresh and casual, something anyone can easily read and understand . All the basic lawn topics will be covered in short articles, thoroughly educating  readers on what I have found to be the truly important points of natural lawn care.  I'm going to cull through all the newsletters I’ve been writing to our customers since1990 and add in hints, seasonal and severe weather advice, plus links to other writers and products that will only add to your gardening knowledge base.

I believe that most people want to reduce and eliminate lawn pesticides that may be harmful to our environment, but before they can give them up, they need more information, and a better way to think about lawns.  I think you will find what you need in the pages to follow.

Enjoy the site!
